The Report Builder User Interface


The interface of Report Builder in edit mode consists of three distinct components:

The Top MenuĀ hosts buttons for the general functionality e.g. for saving and closing a report or for previewing the output. The Side Panel consits of two menus that can be toggled by the buttons at the top: The ‘Toolbox’ from which widgets can be dragged and dropped into the Report Area and ‘Settings & Actions’ (not visible in the image) which hosts global settings for the report.

Top Menu

The Top Menu enables a user to change the report from edit mode to preview mode and to save or close Report Builder:

Preview – Opens the report in view mode in a new browser tab. Same as when opening a report in view mode from the landing page.

Zoom – Zooms in and out of the Report Area.

View – Select a different area and updates data in the report to that area.

Help – Opens the help pages in a new browser tab.

Save – Saves the current report. If the report hasn’t been saved before, this button functions as a ‘save as’ button.

Done – Close the report and return to Report Builder’s landing page.

Sign out – Close the report and return to ArcGIS Online.


Side Panel

The Side Panel consists of two menus that can be toggled via the buttons at top. Both panels have the name box in common, which will display the name of the report.

Toolbox menu

This menu hosts all available widgets that can be added to a report. To add a widget click on one of the icons and drag & drop it into the Report Area. Settings for a widget can be accessed from the right click menu within the widget.

Settings & Actions

This menu is split into several groups:


Properties – Global properties for a report e.g. the Title, Feature ID and Name fields, appearance settings for the index page, export options for social media, printing settings.

Data – Enables the data source for a report to be defined or changed. Available sources are the Geowise DataStore ‘Store’ or from items in the ArcGIS Online account or a user defined URLĀ ‘CSV’ files; ‘Table’ or (Feature) ‘Layer’. Reports created from the Geowise DataStore already have a connection to the ‘Store’, no further adjustments are required. ‘Get Codes’ displays area codes which are needed when setting up csv tables.


Global style settings; widget specific settings can be accessed by right clicking on a widget.

Font – Font style and font family settings.

Colour Scheme – Predefined colour schemes for the report; use ‘Custom’ to define global colours.

Chart Palette – enables a custom palette for indicator and comparison data to be defined.

Margins, Size, Spacing – Settings for page sizes (paper or screen size), page margins, line, letter and word spacing.

Advanced – User defined custom CSS definition.


Save – Saves a report; same as in top menu.

Save as – Only available once a report has been saved. Creates a copy of the current report (this will add a new item in the ArcGIS Online account).

Preview – Opens view mode in a new browser tab; same as in top menu.

Share & Embed – Changes share settings and restrictions on viewing the report. Linking & Embedding holds share code for social media and iframes.

Upload Design – Upload a report-design xml file (see below); this overwrites all the existing style information for the report.

Download Design – Download the current report design as a ‘report-design.xml’ file. This file can then be uploaded (see above) to restore a design or to copy a design to other reports. No changes to the data are made.


Done – Close the report and return to Report Builder’s landing page; same as in top menu.

Sign out – Close the report and return to ArcGIS Online; same as in top menu.
