InstantAtlas Desktop 6.11.0 Release Notes

Contents

Key Enhancements

Changes to the default installation locations

InstantAtlas is now an Esri UK product and the default installation folder has therefore changed to:

C:\Program Files\EsriUK\InstantAtlas

The default location for the  templates, the licence file and Publisher configuration file (iap.ini) has changed to:

C:\ProgramData\EsriUK\InstantAtlas

Please note that the old folders will be deleted during the upgrade process unless they contain files that are not part of the installation. After the upgrade, you may wish to check the previously used folders to ensure any remaining files are saved at your desired location. Prior to 6.11.0, the default installation folders were:

C:\Program Files(x86)\GeoWise\InstantAtlas
C:\ProgramData\GeoWise\InstantAtlas

If your licence file is saved at C:\ProgramData (x86)\GeoWise\InstantAtlas, the InstantAtlas Desktop software will still pick it up after the upgrade as this is the fallback location if no licence file is found at C:\ProgramData\EsriUK\InstantAtlas. Alternatively, you can move the licence file to C:\ProgramData\EsriUK\InstantAtlas.

As a result of the new installation location, your MS Excel may no longer find the InstantAtlas Excel Data Manager add-in. In this case you will see an error message when you open MS Excel after upgrading to InstantAtlas Desktop 6.11.0. Please see information in section Upgrading to 6.11.0 on how to resolve this.

InstantAtlas Desktop is now only supports 64-bit operating systems.

New look and feel of the Publisher, Designer and Style Editor

In this release, the Java version used in the InstantAtlas Desktop tools (Publisher, Designer and Style Editor) has been updated to version 15. In the process we updated some of the icons and graphics.

Most modern web browsers no longer allow you to directly open and display an InstantAtlas dynamic report saved to a local or shared drive and for this reason the buttons to view the report from the final screen of the Publisher have been removed. Instead a link to the help page with instruction on how to start the report has been added.

The dialog confirming that your report was unpacked now contains a link to the report folder. Clicking on it opens the folder in File Explorer which allows you to get to the report files in one click.

Signed Excel Data Manager add-in

To verify the authenticity of our Excel add-in, we have now digitally signed the IA Data Manager.xla file.

Enhancements to the HTML Edition Templates

  • When customBreaks are set for a categoric indicator, the report will by default show all defined legend categories, even if the currently selected indicator only contains a subset of these values. It is now possible to remove categories defined by customBreaks from the legend if the data of the selected indicator (and/or filter) does not include all of them. To do this, enter a line for the relevant indicator into the metadata using the MetadataElement removeCustomBreaksNotInData and a Value of TRUE:

  • The Area Breakdown Pie Chart now shows data for comparison features.
  • If nested themes are being used (e.g. if the data.js file is being created using streaming code) the spine chart now shows the whole theme path. Please note that currently the Excel and Access data managers do not support nested themes.

Key Bug Fixes

Bug Fix to the Publisher

When adding ArcGIS Online Map Services as background mapping  to the Publisher, the software is now once again able to accept URLs served via https. This means that the default options from the drop down list will again work without needing to change the URL.

Please note that from 8th December 2020, ArcGIS Online Map Services will exclusively be served via https (http will be switched off). Existing InstantAtlas reports using an http connection to an ArcGIS Online Map Service will continue to work as the web browser will redirect the request to https in the background.

Bug Fixes to the HTML Edition Templates

Area Profile

When the spine chart is set to Display Indicators For = Selected Date the chart incorrectly showed data for the latest date for any indicator that didn’t have data for the selected date. For example: Indicator 1 contains the dates 2007, 2008 and 2009. Indicator 2 contains the dates 2008 and 2009. In previous versions, when the user selected the date 2007 from Indicator 1 in the data explorer or time animation component, the spine chart showed the values for 2009 for Indicator 2. This has now been changed so that no values show for indicators that do not have data for the selected year. This still allows the user to see and select all of the indicators in the spine chart.

Other bug fixes

  • The reports no longer show unrounded Quantile legend breaks when the setting Build Legend Using Time Series? is active.
  • Natural breaks legend classification no longer displays one class less than what is set in Designer.
  • The Time Series chart tooltips in German, Spanish and French dynamic reports now show the correct decimal symbol and thousand separator for the set locale.
  • The property Match Axis to Selected Features? no longer causes a default y axis of -1 to 1 for the Stacked Associates chart when no features are selected.
  • When the Time Series – Line Chart needs to drop x-axis labels due to lack of space, the gap between the x-axis and the bottom border of the chart no longer increases.
  • An issue where an additional data point would appear in the Time Series – Line Chart when the chart is set to show associate data has now been fixed.
  • The Time Series – Line Legend no longer shows multiple occurrences of associate names when one or more associates have been excluded.
  • It is now possible to switch off one of the base layers by default in reports published using the Double Base Layer template.

Compatibility Notes

Compatibility Between Reports of the Same HTML Template but Different Versions

You may wish to publish a version 6.11.0 HTML dynamic report to benefit from the enhancements/bug fixes but retain the data and custom design that you created for an older HTML report. Of the files that contain the data/design, some can be safely copied over from an older report while others cannot. The table in the sections below show which files can safely be copied into a version 6.11.0 report.

File Notes
Data files (data.js and supporting theme files) Yes, can be copied to a v6.11.0 report
Stylesheet (default.css) Yes, can be copied to a v6.11.0 report. Note that the old style sheet will not contain new settings which were introduced in newer versions.1
Configuration file (config.xml) Yes, can be copied to a v6.11.0 report. Note that the old configuration file will not contain new settings or components which were introduced in newer versions.

1 If you are using map labels and your old stylesheet is of version 6.6.0 or 6.6.1 you will not be able to copy it into a 6.11.0 report as the labels may not appear as expected.
